Geriatric Mental Health Workforce---Current Initiatives and Critical Issues
Session offered by the APA Board of Educational Affairs. This symposium will provide: an overview of current geropsychology practice patterns and geriatric mental health initiatives; steps that psychologists can take to increase their competencies in work with older adults; and recommendations to stimulate the future development of the professional geriatric mental health workforce. Specifically, recommendations from the Institute of Medicine study, The Mental Health Workforce for Geriatric Populations (to be released in spring 2012) and the findings of the recent APA Survey of Professional Geropsychology Training and Experiences will be discussed. Next, the utility of the Pikes Peak Model for Training in Professional Geropsychology (Knight, Karel, Hinrichsen, Qualls & Duffy, 2009), the geropsychology competencies evaluation tool (Karel, Knight, Duffy, Hinrichsen & Zeiss, 2010) and other resources for psychologists interested in increasing their competency in this area of practice, will be highlighted. Finally, key issues, opportunities, and recommendations related to the geropsychology pipeline and its critical place within efforts related to the future development of the geriatric mental health workforce will be explored
