This introductory workshop presents current perspectives on etiology, diagnosis, ethical responsibilities, and best practices for integrated treatment of transgender clients. The state-of-the-art approaches to hormone replacement therapy, surgical and other physical interventions, providing mental health services, and collaborating with others for social support with which mental health professionals working with transgender clients and their families must be familiar are discussed along with legal changes and federal policies.

Learning Objective 1
Develop an understanding of important terminology and concepts associated with gender identity as well as the etiology of gender identity and its pertinence to working with transgender persons and their families.

Demonstrate knowledge about the gender transition process and the potential roles of mental health professionals in helping individuals and family members through that process.

Dr. Carlozzi

Dr. Carlozzi is a Professor of Counseling Psychology in the School of Applied Health and Educational Psychology at Oklahoma State University (OSU). He earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, his master’s degree in sociology from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and his doctorate in counseling from the University of Houston. During his thirty-seven years with OSU, he has served as Head of the School of Applied Health and Educational Psychology, Associate Dean and Interim Dean of the Graduate College, Coordinator of Counseling and Counseling Psychology, Director of Training for the doctoral program in counseling psychology, and advisor and mentor to numerous graduate students. In 1996, he received the OSU Regents Distinguished Teaching Award in recognition of his outstanding instructional programs, and received the OSU-Tulsa Outstanding Teaching Award in 2012. Dr. Carlozzi is licensed as a psychologist and marital and family therapist in Oklahoma.  He moved to the OSU-Tulsa in 2006 to serve as Professor and Director of the OSU-Tulsa Counseling Center. He has maintained a private psychology practice part-time for approximately 25 years, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Mental Health Association Oklahoma and is Co-Chair of the association’s Education Committee. He has provided counseling services for many transgender clients, and for the past five years has served as co-leader of a support group for parents of transgender children and teens at the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center in Tulsa.

Kurt Choate

Dr. Kurt Thomas Choate received his B.S. with a double major in Mathematics and Education from the University of Tulsa in 1991. His M.Ed. in School Counseling was granted from Northeastern State University in 1993. In 2003, he received his Ph.D. in School Psychology from Oklahoma State University. As a postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Choate worked at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia as a public school consultant and in the hospital’s ADHD clinic. After his post-doctoral work, he led and participated in the development for several nationally standardized test instruments through Pearson/Harcourt Assessment/The Psychological Corporation and taught at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, TX. Returning to Tulsa, Dr. Choate is currently an Associate Professor of Psychology & Counseling at the Northeastern State University – Broken Arrow (NSU-BA) campus. He spends his time teaching in the Psychology and Counseling department, working as a consultant in the NSU Reading and Math clinic, consulting with area public schools and hospitals, and counseling at the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center. Dr. Choate has several research interests that include test development and assessment, consultation with teachers, parents and schools concerning academic and behavioral interventions with students, gender roles, human sexuality, and labeling bias/discrimination. Dr. Choate is a certified mathematics teacher, school counselor and school psychologist for the state of Oklahoma. He is also a licensed professional counselor and licensed psychologist in the state of Oklahoma.  

James Scholl

James Scholl is a clinical psychology doctoral student and instructor at the University of Tulsa. He recently received his M.A. and will be a doctoral candidate at the end of the Fall 2016 semester. His research interests fall under the umbrella of traumatic stress, specifically trauma-related sleep disorders, sexual violence prevention, and resilience in the gender non-conforming population. He is a research assistant for Dr. Joanne Davis’ Trauma Research, Assessment, Prevention, and Treatment Center as well as the University of Tulsa Institute for Trauma, Abuse, and Neglect.  As part of his clinical training Jim works as a therapist at the Dennis R. O’Neill Equality Center and Community Health Connection. Jim is currently a board member at Tulsa Cares, and Health Outreach Prevention Education, Inc. Outside of school, Jim is a yoga instructor at Sky Fitness and Wellbeing, and the Yoga Room.

Laura Arrowsmith

Dr. Laura Arrowsmith received her B.S. from the College of Emporia in Emporia, KS. She received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. Her residency work was completed at Oklahoma State University Medical Center in Tulsa, OK. She is a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health and is on the Board of Directors for the National Center for Transgender Equality. Currently, she is the physician advisor for transgender medical care at the Heartland Division of Planned Parenthood. She serves as a public educator for transgender issues and is an activist for transgender equality. She also donates her personal and professional time to the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center in Tulsa, OK.
