Ethics and Complex Boundary Challenges: What You Didnt Learn in Graduate School

As graduate students, we learned to avoid problematic multiple relationships, exploitation, and unprofessional boundaries. Easy enough. But, when we begin treating actual clients, the confident clarity we enjoyed as novices begins to wane, and real-life complexities emerge. The intersection of client characteristics and circumstances with our own vulnerabilities can create insidious blind spots that may compromise our effectiveness. This workshop will focus on strategies for inoculating our practices against the risks that challenge even the most experienced clinicians.
Learning Objective 1
Identify at least three client characteristics and circumstances that may precipitate a risk of unchecked countertransference and commensurate compromises to objectivity and effectiveness.
Learning Objective 2
Identify some of their own idiosyncratic vulnerabilities that have the potential to create ethical blind spots in their clinical work.
Learning Objective 3
Identify relevant professional ethics codes that provide guidance for psychologist-clinicians when they encounter dilemmas related to boundaries.
PresenterL: Janet T. Thomas, Psy.D.
Dr. Thomas is a psychologist in independent practice in Saint Paul where she provides psychotherapy, ethics consultation, and supervision. She has taught graduate courses, including professional ethics, at the University of Saint Thomas in Minneapolis and at Argosy University – Twin Cities. Dr. Thomas has authored journal articles and book chapters, as well as the books, Navigating the Board Complaint Process: A Guide for Minnesota Psychologists, and The Ethics of Supervision and Consultation: Practical Guidance for Mental Heath Professionals (APA, 2010). She is a former chair of the MPA Ethics Committee and a current member of the APA Ethics Committee.
