Many common statements about learning disabilities are based on clinical lore and are not supported by research. This workshop will describe evidenced-based strategies for assessment of learning disabilities in adults. Participants will learn about characteristics of learning disability subtypes and evaluation methods based on research. Details of the evaluation will include key historical factors, a cognitive framework for assessment, and specific checklists and tests. Additional topics will include brief batteries when time is limited and documentation requirements. Reasonable accommodations for school and the workplace, and interventions will be covered briefly. Application will be illustrated with brief case examples throughout the workshop and a detailed case example at the end.

Describe the most common types of learning disabilities in adults and the components of assessment needed for each, based on research.

Apply the evidence base to comprehensive and brief evaluations of learning disabilities in adults.

Describe current documentation requirements of standardized testing agencies and post-secondary education settings.

Presenter: Robert L. Mapou, PhD

Dr. Mapou has published and presented on adult learning disabilities and ADHD, the neurobehavioral effects of HIV disease, and other neuropsychological issues. His book, Adult Learning Disabilities and ADHD: Research-Informed Assessment, was published in 2009 by Oxford University Press. He is an ABPP board-certified clinical neuropsychologist with The Stixrud Group, in Silver Spring, MD, where he specializes in the evaluation of adolescents and adults with learning disabilities and ADHD. He holds faculty appointments in the Department of Neurology at Georgetown University School of Medicine, and the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
