Principle A of our ethics code reminds us that: “Psychologists strive to be aware of the possible effect of their own physical and mental health on their ability to help those with whom they work.” This INTERMEDIATE workshop examines the complex links between self-care and professional competence. The participatory format includes a structured self-assessment exercise and the application of ethical and self-care principles to challenging professional practice and multicultural vignettes.

Learning Objective 1
Explain how maintaining personal well-being is an ethical responsibility that is directly related to competence in a complex multicultural society.

Learning Objective 2
Identify at least two vulnerabilities to occupational stress common to psychologists and two that are unique to you based on a self-assessment exercise.

Learning Objective 3
Identify common warning signs of occupational stress for professional psychologists in general and describe two which are most likely to occur in your professional practice and develop a specific plan for implementing two specific self-care strategies into your personal and professional life.
