This three hour introductory workshop will review key issues in the provision of psychological services to older adults, discuss the theoretical, historical, and research foundation of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) for depression, and illustrate the clinical application of IPT with depressed older adults. The structure of IPT, therapeutic ethos, goals, and strategies will be discussed across the three phases of IPT treatment for depression. Clinical case material of older adults will be presented in conjunction with each of the four IPT problem areas which are role transitions, role disputes, grief, and interpersonal deficits.

Presenter: Gregory A. Hinrichsen, PhD

During 35 years in the field of aging, Gregory Hinrichsen, PhD has provided clinical services, conducted research, directed psychology internship and fellowship programs, and had leadership roles in professional organizations. He has contributed to public policy as an APA Congressional Fellow and as National Mental Health Director for Community Mental Health in the Department of Veterans Affairs. For almost 20 years he has provided Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) to older adults, supervised those learning IPT, and conducted IPT training in the U.S. and abroad. His publications include a book published by APA, Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Depressed Older Adults, which is the IPT clinical treatment manual for older people.
